Easy Donuts Recipe for Beginners

Making homemade donuts is simpler than you might think, and it’s a fun activity that everyone can enjoy! Today, I’m sharing my easy recipe for delicious donuts that you can make right in your kitchen. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to perfect your technique, this guide will walk you through each step.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 250 g Flour
  • 30 g Sugar
  • 4 g Dry yeast
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 Egg (size S/M)
  • 1.2 dl Hand-warm Milk (120 g)
  • 35 g Butter

Step 1: Making the Donut Dough

Let’s get started with the dough. In a bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, dry yeast, and salt. Once combined, add the egg and hand-warm milk. Mix everything together until you have a dough.

Now it’s time to knead the dough. You’ll need to do this for about 3-4 minutes. After kneading, add the butter, wrapping it in the center of the dough. Knead it again for another 2 minutes.

Once you’ve kneaded the dough, let it rise for about 1 hour until it doubles in size. After it has risen, knead it a little again and pull the dough out into a long piece. Divide the dough into 12 pieces, each weighing about 35-40 g.

Step 2: Shaping Your Donuts

Now, let’s shape the donuts! Start by rounding each piece of dough. You can fold the dough towards the center several times and then turn it down onto the table. Use your hand to rotate it until it’s smooth.

Once the pieces are rounded, press the dough flat and create a hole in the middle. The small piece of dough from the center can be made into a small round donut. Let the shaped donuts rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 3: Frying the Donuts

While the donuts are rising, heat the oil in a deep fryer or a heavy pot. It’s crucial that the oil maintains a temperature of 155-160°C. Keep an eye on it with a thermometer.

Once the temperature is right, carefully let the donuts slide off the paper into the oil. Fry them for about 2-2.5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Don’t forget to fry the small rounds for about 2 minutes as well!

Step 4: Making the Glaze

Now that your donuts are fried, let’s make the glaze. In a bowl, mix together 1.2 dl hand-warm milk, 30 g melted butter, and 700 g icing sugar until smooth and lump-free. The glaze should be a little stiff, so don’t worry if it seems thick.

Mixing ingredients for glaze

Divide the glaze into three bowls and save some white icing for decoration. You can colour the glaze with food colours, but add just a little at a time. For a chocolate glaze, mix 3 tbsp of cocoa with 2 tsp of milk.

Step 5: Dipping the Donuts

Heat the glaze in the microwave until it’s hand-warm. Once the donuts are cool enough, dip them into the glaze while it’s still warm. Let the excess glaze drip off and decorate while it’s still wet. I love using chopped peanuts for a delicious touch!

For a fun finishing touch, you can put some of the glaze in a bag, cut a small hole, and drizzle it over the donuts. And don’t forget to roll the small donut balls in sugar!
